Richard's Land Management

Ground maintenance, arboriculture, fencing, vegetation management and earthworks

A weekly grounds round, a one-off clearance or a season of highways maintenance. The same team plans it, turns up and finishes it.

Common questions

Timing, permissions and what to expect

The questions we get asked most before a job starts. If yours is not here, ring and ask. We would rather talk it through than have you guess.

When can hedges be cut?

Not between 1 March and 31 August on farmland. The Hedgerows (England) Regulations 2024 close that window, and separately it is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to damage an active nest at any time of year. So most hedge work happens from September through to the end of February. There are exemptions, for sightlines and dead or dangerous growth among them, and we will tell you honestly whether yours applies rather than cutting and hoping.

Do I need permission before pruning or felling a tree?

Sometimes, and it is worth finding out before we quote. If the tree carries a Tree Preservation Order you need the council's consent first. If it stands in a conservation area you have to give the council six weeks' written notice. Either way we check with the local authority as part of quoting, and we will not start work that needs consent until it is in writing.

When is the best time of year for tree work?

Late autumn to late winter for most of it. The leaves are off so the structure is visible, the ground is firm enough to work from, and it sits outside the nesting season. Storm damage and anything unsafe we deal with whenever it happens.

What is a rhyne, and do you clear them?

A rhyne, said "reen", is the drainage ditch that keeps the Somerset Levels farmable. They silt up and grow over, and once they stop moving water the land behind them floods. We clear them by machine from the bank, along with culverts and field ditches, and we work to whatever the internal drainage board or the Environment Agency has specified.

How deep does a land drain go?

Usually somewhere between 600mm and a metre, closer to a metre in heavy clay, with the spacing between runs set by how the soil holds water. Getting the fall right matters more than the depth. A drain laid flat is a trench full of water, which is why we dig to a level rather than by eye.

What fencing do I need for stock, and what for deer?

Stock netting on treated posts at about 1.1m handles sheep and cattle, with a strand of barbed or plain wire on top depending on what is in the field. Deer need height, so 1.8m to 2m of deer netting. On hard or stony ground we drive the posts mechanically, which holds far better than a dug and backfilled hole.

Is forestry mulching better than clearing by hand?

For scrub, bramble and regrowth over any real area, yes. The mulcher takes it down and leaves it as a mulch layer, so there is nothing to burn and nothing to cart away, and one machine does in a day what a team would take a week over. Near boundaries, services or anything you want to keep, hand clearance is the right call and we do that instead.

How long does a ground maintenance contract run?

Most run a year, with a visit schedule agreed up front so you know what happens and when. It is not a condition of anything else though. If you want one cut, or one season, that is a job we are glad to do.
